Twin Peaks

Finally getting into this show... after I don't know, 15-16 episodes? I do enjoy Lynch, but I wouldn't call myself a diehard fan, sometimes maybe I'm even a pseudo-fan at times. It's something about his style that both intrigues and disgusts simultaneously, as if it's intentionally in bad taste to almost dare you to continue watching, to challenge yourself; not to mention some of it can be a straight-up bore at times. He can also make some of the best actors/actresses seem like the absolute worst (other times they're just bad picks; to this day, I still don't get his obsession with Laura Dern). While I may not always respect his work as a artform, I do respect his originality. His films may be tough to get through sometimes but at least they're generally only a few hours, so I'm not exactly trudging too long through some of the torturous bits... and I will admit, I do leave with more to think about than most films; which is ultimately what I come to films for, to leave with something to ponder and possibly draw my own conclusions from. And whether that final impression is good or bad, great or awful, it's very rarely ever indifferent.

The problem with Twin Peaks for me inherently was that it wasn't only a few hours. Watching the first few episodes I could only say: "Oh, it's only 30+ hours to go." However, now I watch it because I find it entertaining, not because I want to leave with something (although I do anyway). The typical awkward Lynch humor is always there, but there are some genuinely funny moments through out too (Andy for example). Even some moments can be frightening or even emotional, if still marred by early 90s production values and sometimes bad acting. To be honest, I like most of the characters and actors here, the few that I don't have mostly grown on me (Lara Flynn Boyle is still such a bore though).

I do think I finally get Lynch now. It took all his movies and his TV series to do it, but I think I do. It's all just an ongoing capture of a stream-of-consciousness dream-state. But most of all, it's dark comedy, even if he never fully intended such.

To call Lynch pretentious or weird-to-be-weird is just too easy, and totally misses the point. That point being? I dunno.

does "adult-oriented" necessarily have to mean tons of sex and swear words?
